uninstall W-XP in drive C.  keep clean install W-XP in drive D.  Not an upgrade.  Both installed from same original OEM installation CD.
I have 2 partitions on my single hard disk. W-XP was installed on the primary partition (C). I started having problems with it. It had become really slow. The transfer mode for my hard drive was stuck in PIO. I decided to do a clean install from my original CD (OEM) on partition 2 (drive D). I was successful. Now the transfer mode is DMA 5 and I have installed SP-2 and activated the installation. Everything is fine. I just want to uninstall the old W-XP in drive C. I tried unintallling by going into command prompt mode and using osuninstall.exe. I got a message that it could not execute since the registration information was not complete. I tried registering on line. I was able to do that and got a registration number, but just before the registration process could be completed I got an error message and the final process of contacting the Microsoft server was not completed. I tried several times and failed each time. On boot-up I was being directed to an option for choosing either the installation on C or on D. I edited the multi installation boot.ini file which had been created (I assume automatically by Windows when it encountered two possible installations on one hard drive) on boot up. It now boots up automatically from my new installation on drive D. Even though my computer is running fine with the OS in drive D, it still irks me that I cannot uninstall the one in drive C, even thought I have the origianl Windows XP installation CD. I did notice in one of the previous threads (by someone named Ashram?) that a very similar question had been posed, but there was o answer. The moderator said it was posed to a Vista forum and would redirect it to an XP forum. When I checked on the XP forum I could not see that thread. Any help in this matter would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. John1 person needs an answerI do too

Hello John Smith II All you need to do is to delete all system files on C except Boot.inintldrNtdetect.com These files must not be deleted as they are the boot files. They are hidden files so you must go to folder options and Show them Windows Explorer/Tools/Folder Options/View Put a check at Show hidden files and folders Uncheck Hide protected operating system files Apply You should then be able to see these three files in C:\ Delete everything else..

I actually found a solution that suits my needs better. I found a software called Bootit Next Generation (BING) from Terabyte Unllimited which has excellent partitioning tools. With the assistance of Brian, a very able resource person from their community support newsgroup, I was able to delete the Windlows XP system completely from Drive D. I then extended the C drive partition to the new unallocated space created by deleting drive D. I then created a Data partition on Drive D. I now have the environment that I was looking for: OS on drive C and Data on drive D. If someone has a similar problem I would urge them to check out this software. It worked for me. John
